But there are so many things to consider, you don't know where to start, and you don't want to do it wrong! Not to mention you're busy providing the best care you can and don't have time to make it happen on your own.

That's where we come in.
Let's work together to do better.
My name is Meaghan Ray Peters
My pronouns are they/them
I am an experienced physiotherapist, currently completing my PhD at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. I am also queer and nonbinary. I have given many talks on inclusivity in physiotherapy practice and clinical spaces and developed tools for inclusive health care, clinical spaces, and health research.
But despite inlcuding as much practical content in my talks as I can, clinicians still struggle with knowing where to start, finding the time to improve their inclusivity, and feeling like they have enough expertise to do it right.

If this sounds like you, I'd love to help!

Inclusivity Matters
You might be thinking 'Why bother?' or 'This seems like too much work.'
You're right, it can be a lot of work. And, it does matter. Not just for 2S/LGBTQ+ people. Inclusivity benefits everyone - all patients, all staff, and your business.
All Patients
benefit from inclusivity directed at 2S/LGBTQ+ people.
One of the fundamental principles behind inclusivity, especially for 2S/LGBTQ+ people, is recognizing the assumptions we make about people and learning how to interact and provide care without making those assumptions.

This benefits any patient who has an invisible aspect of their identity or experiences relevant to their care that does not match the proxies that society and professional training teaches us. This may be a young woman who had a double mastectomy due to breast cancer. Or a young man with chronic pain due to arthritis.

Improving your 2S/LGBTQ+ inclusivity will help you interact without making assumptions, know when and how to ask necessary questions, and understand how to use this information in your care.
All Staff
benefit from inclusivity directed at 2S/LGBTQ+ people.
When you prioritize inclusivity you are showing your staff that you not only see your patients as individuals, you care about your staff as individuals too. All staff members, especially those who identify as 2S/LGBTQ+, will feel a greater sense of belonging, recognition, and purpose. They will feel better supported and be more invested in the success of your clinic.

A large part of improving your inclusivity is improving staff knowledge and behaviours. They will gain concrete skills that will support more respectful and supportive interactions. These skills and the knowledge they gain will benefit them in all areas of their life.

I have had many co-workers express their appreciation for the information I have provided because a younger family member recently came out to them and they knew how to respond in a supportive way.
Your Business
benefits from inclusivity directed at 2S/LGBTQ+ people.
When your staff feel supported and respected, your staff retention improves. When your patients feel respected and recognized for their unique identities and experiences, they will not only continue to seek your services, they will recommend your clinic to others.

The 2S/LGBTQ+ population is severly underserved in all areas of healthcare. When we find a clinic or service that is inclusive and supportive, we recommend it to everyone in our community. And we bring our families with us.

If good staff and patient retention and excellent word of mouth sounds like a good business model to you, then improving your 2S/LGBTQ+ inclusivity is a good place to start!
